10 people you should write

While we might not all agree on how excited we are to be heading back to work after the holiday break, there is one thing everyone can agree on: An email is good, but receiving a letter is better.

Simply put, sending and receiving beautiful pieces of mail is the best. And what better way to start the new year off right than by joining in the fun and starting a new letter-writing habit.

If you already have a few special people in mind who would love nothing more than a lovely card with a heartfelt message straight from your beautiful brain, you should start writing to them now.

Need ideas on who to send a card? We’re here to help. Here are 10 people who’d love to receive a letter from you.

Your best friend

You text and call any time, but when was the last time you said, “You’re the best” to your bestie on paper? They’re going to be so surprised and we’re pretty sure they’re going to love receiving a little surprise from you in their mailbox. Obviously, because you’re BFFs, they’ll call or text you immediately to notify you of their happiness and reaffirm your status as their bestie. They may even return the favor and send you some snail mail back in return.

A child

You know what’s really cool as a kid? Receiving anything with your name on it. It means it’s yours. That it’s all about you. Whether it’s nieces, nephews, grandkids, or even the kid down the block, we can guarantee that the amazing kid in your life will be excited when they find a card appeared in their mailbox just for them.

A former teacher

We realize there are only so many hours in the day and you’re busy being a boss, but when was the last time you let the people of your past know how you’re doing? Take a few minutes and update your former favorite teacher on your accomplishments. Teachers, instructors, and other school administrators make a huge impact on our lives, yet we don’t always remember to let them know how often we think back and remember their words of wisdom. Or how much they meant to us.

A coworker

It’s easy to get caught up in work and forget to say kind words to the people we see every day. Which is why now is the perfect time to take a minute and let the coworker who always has your back know that work just wouldn’t be the same without them. The best part is you don’t even need to ask their address. Just send it to the office or drop it at their desk.

Your morning go-to

Whether it’s your barista, newspaper delivery person, fitness instructor, or the clerk who’s always smiling at you from behind the bodega counter, your morning wouldn’t start the same without them. Sure, you might not even know their name, but we bet they know your face (and your favorite coffee, pickup time, spot in class, and order). Write them a little note and slip it to them on your way to start your day. Let them know that you’re thankful they continually supply you with the good stuff to get you through your day. Even if you’re usually too groggy to let them know.

Your family

You don’t pick your family, but you can pick one—or them all—to send a card to. It might be your mom, dad, sister, brother, aunt, or grandpa, it doesn’t matter. No matter who you choose first, they’ll be so surprised to hear from you in paper form. Plus, they’ll be able to cherish your words because they’re literally written out right in front of them.

A friend’s pet

Call us crazy, but our friend’s pets are some of our best friends, too! It might seem silly to send a furry friend with four paws a thinking of you card, but can’t you just see that tail wag when their pet parent reads them their special card? And let’s be real, the pet mom or dad is going to be over the moon with your quirky ways.

Your post office pal

If anyone values a piece of personalized mail, it’s your mail carrier. They pass out bills, junk, and—if they’re lucky—a handful of pretty letters every day. Surprise them with their own happy mail. Just leave it in the mailbox or catch them at yours during their next drop off.

A belated thank you

You know that gift card grandma sent you a few weeks (or months) ago? Did you remember to say thank you?  If not, no worries. There’s no such thing as a late note of gratitude. You can still show your appreciation now, even if you spent that gift card months ago. The gift giver will love knowing you enjoyed it and might even send you another surprise in the future.

Your main squeeze

Sure, you may exchange calls, texts, and more multiple times a day, but all too often, we forget to let the people closest to use know how much they matter. A handwritten note is the perfect way to put your thoughts on paper without getting choked up or nervous. Plus, they can literally hold on to your words forever because you physically wrote them down.
